Summer break can be challenging for moms. There is so much fun to be embraced, but with all the extra activities and none of the school year routines, home can quickly devolve into messiness. Thankfully, there are solutions.

With three practical steps, you’ll soon have routines in place that will not only keep things running smoothly in the summer, but all year long!

Step 1: Create Summer Routines

One common reason our homes devolve into messiness during the summer is due to a lack of routine. During the school year there is a regular daily schedule surrounding school, work, play, and extra-curriculars. But in the summer everything is more relaxed and more people are home for longer periods of time. It’s just a natural recipe for mess.

The solution is to establish a basic daily routine and clearly express your expectations to your family. Knowing what to expect will provide you and your kids with goals that keep you engaged and on track.

To develop your routine, consider what your family already enjoys and what you’d like to accomplish this summer. Be sure to include recreation, tidying time, and rest.

Don’t feel like you have to stick rigidly to your established routine. This is summer after all! Some days will be totally different than the norm, and that’s fine! The key is to create a system that you generally follow so everyone knows what to expect. Without a plan, thermodynamics naturally take over!

Step 2: Do Some Decluttering

If your home is currently messy, it’s a good idea to declutter before the start of the summer. The unfortunate truth of housekeeping is that clutter begets more clutter.

First, start with the easy stuff. Go through your house one area at a time and get rid of trash and things that are broken beyond repair. Then take out of place items back to their established “homes.” If you don’t have a home for it yet, just put it where you would look for it first. If do just those two things, I promise your house will already start to feel more tidy. If you want to go further, you can evaluate what you’re currently using/not using and decide what you can let go of. The less you have in your home, the less you’ll have to take care of!

Step 3: Establish Your Toy-Free Zones

One of the most common frustrations I hear from moms is that their kids’ toys are everywhere: strewn across play rooms, living spaces, dining rooms, kitchens, and yards. Clean up is such a big job that it almost never gets done.

The solution is to create zones for playtime. Toys may be played with in designated rooms only, or you can make certain rooms off limits. For instance you might say, “Toys may be played with in the playroom or in your bedrooms, but not in the living room, home office, or kitchen. And no indoor toys may be taken outside.”

If there’s not room for all the toys, consider decluttering down to the most used toys, or at least to create a toy rotation system. Less available toys means less mess to clean up at the end of the day.

Implementing these three steps into your summer will make a huge difference in the way your home feels, and may even make the season more fun!  Have a wonderful summer and enjoy all the fun it brings!
